![]() ![]() The narrator only distinguishes the paths from one another after he has already selected one and traveled many years through life. However, when we look closer at the text of the poem, it becomes clear that such an idealistic analysis is largely inaccurate. Rather than taking the safe path that others have traveled, the narrator prefers to make his own way in the world. Moreover, the narrator’s decision to choose the “less traveled” path demonstrates his courage. This reading of the poem is extremely popular because every reader can empathize with the narrator’s decision: having to choose between two paths without having any knowledge of where each road will lead. The narrator decided to seize the day and express himself as an individual by choosing the road that was “less traveled by.” As a result of this decision, the narrator claims, his life was fundamentally different that it would have been had he chosen the more well-traveled path. Since its publication, many readers have analyzed the poem as a nostalgic commentary on life choices. This poem is made up of four stanzas of five lines, each with a rhyme scheme of ABAAB.Īlong with “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” this poem is one of Frost’s most beloved works and is frequently studied in high school literature classes. The narrator ends on a nostalgic note, wondering how different things would have been had he chosen the other path. However, he realizes that it is unlikely that he will ever have the opportunity to come back to this specific point in time because his choice of path will simply lead to other forks in the road (and other decisions). After choosing one of the roads, the narrator tells himself that he will come back to this fork one day in order to try the other road. He considers both paths and concludes that each one is equally well-traveled and appealing. This way, I know I have people who read my work, to whom I would gladly write more and more. The narrator comes upon a fork in the road while walking through a yellow wood. If you found it interesting and would like to read more analyses. My analysis to Frost's "The Road Not Taken" poem. He had taken the less traveled road, knowing it could turn out to be a bad, bad mistake, if he would not succeed. Robert Frost had to decide between being a farmer or a poet. The narrator will be saying this in the future, but again this could get two meanings-ĭifference in what way? For the good or for the bad? I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference We can see throughout all the poem that the narrator is afraid of making a mistake not choosing the other road. ![]() Only time will tell if this sigh will be of relief, or of regret. A sigh of regret - if the narrator will regret not having chosen the other path- the road not taken.A sigh of relief - if the narrator will be satisfied with his choice of roads. Here, the narrator talks about the future. The narrator shows regret, and questions his decision- maybe he/she would never be there again. He/she acknowledge the fact that in life, each decision we make changes the final outcome in the future. The narrator chooses to take one road over the other. ![]() The narrator says that in that morning, "no step had trodden black"- the leaves are still clean and yellow, no one stepped on them with mud on the shoes, making them look black. The narrator mentions that the two paths are equally "worn" by others who have taken them. The narrator examines the second road, and finds there is no much of a difference between the two. The narrator is having a difficulty deciding which road to take, he /she tries to look down as far as possible, perhaps to find a reason to prefer one road over the other. The narrator is sad due to the fact he/she can't travel both roads. The narrator comes to an intersection and has to decide, which of the roads to take. The color yellow is also symbolic to the color of the forests in New England during the autumn when yellow leaves are covering the ground. The narrator is travelling in a yellow wood, which is very symbolic to the rural environment in which Frost grew.
